Unlocking Your Clinical Blind Spots Through Peer Consultation
By Ashley Charbonneau
Therapists can spend a lot of time and energy supporting clients through complex challenges. Clinical consultation can be a vital component of ethical and sustainable clinical practice, whether you are in an agency setting or in private practice. Consultation can help take your practice to the next level, enhance the use of modalities you enjoy using, address blind spots, build community, and continue learning and growing as a therapist.

Consultation as a Lifelong Practice
Clinical consultation is a relationship with a colleague (or supervisor) who provides feedback and a safe space to explore your clinical practice. Like many therapists, you might think of consultation as something tied to supervision requirements during the early stages of training. Since your growth as a clinician doesn’t stop the day you receive your license, neither should the practice of discussing your work with others, whether it is someone who is more seasoned than you, a peer, or a new colleague.
Additionally, a lot of seasoned therapists often find peer consultation groups to be even more valuable later in their careers. The field is ever-changing, and therapists want to keep their clinical skills sharp. A consultation group can provide a dedicated, confidential space to reflect on client presentations and interactions, celebrate breakthroughs, and discuss new therapeutic approaches. This can be a gentle reminder that no matter how experienced you are, there’s always something you can learn from others.
How Consultation Can Transform Your Practice
Engaging regularly in clinical consultation can support how you approach clinical challenges but also encourage you to explore how you think, feel, and grow as a therapist. It can help you pivot to provide other services, identify specific training needs, and implement new modalities or philosophical lenses. It can also prevent or mitigate feelings of burnout, while ensuring clients receive quality care.
Something else to consider is: every therapist has blind spots. These may initially arise from your own histories, or your professional experience, or both, and they can get reinforced over time if you continue to do things the way you always do. A consultation setting provides colleagues to help you see what you’ve missed, question your assumptions, and gently challenge you to consider alternative perspectives.
For example, hearing how others might conceptualize a case or asking, “What would you have done in this situation?” can shift your understanding and practice. This process deepens your self-awareness and can enhance your confidence as you continue to grow as a therapist.
Building a Community with Group Consultation
Group consultation is a way to lean into community with other peers. One of our goals at Firelight Supervision is to foster collaboration and connection. We encourage our colleagues to share cases, use creativity to support one another in how they intervene with clients, and discuss ethical dilemmas.
You do not have to operate in isolation; you don’t have to face difficult situations alone. The collaborative spirit and empathy can be parallel processes from colleagues supporting colleagues to therapists supporting clients.
