The Benefits of Group Supervision for Child and Family Therapists

The Benefits of Group Supervision for Child and Family Therapists

By Leah Band

Group supervision is a structured process in which one qualified clinical supervisor meets with multiple therapists or trainees at the same time to support their professional development, clinical decision-making, and ethical practice. In plain terms, group supervision for provisionally licensed clinicians allows for collaboration, support and learning for everyone in the group.

As a child and family therapist, your days can be so challenging as you balance the complicated pieces of this work. It is critical to have a space to process all aspects of your practice.

A Broader Clinical Perspective

A beautiful part about processing your clinical work in a group setting versus in one-on-one supervision is getting to hear how others would approach your challenge from their perspective. This is especially true when the members of your group have different clinical backgrounds. It allows for things to be seen through multiple lenses and can often challenge assumptions and blind spots you didn’t even realize you were holding.

Learning Beyond Your Own Caseload

When I was working toward my clinical license I participated in a supervision group with clinicians who all worked in different environments: I was in child welfare, one was in a private practice setting and one was working in hospitals doing crisis assessments. On the surface it could seem to some that there would be no overlap and nothing that we could support each other on, but this couldn’t be farther from the truth.

Together, we were all able to share about our cases and learn from each other’s successes and challenges. We were able to gain knowledge from one another to take back to our own clinical practice and further our work with our clients individually.

Reducing Professional Isolation as a Child and Family Therapist

As most clinicians working in private practice settings know, feeling isolated can be one of the biggest challenges you experience and can drive you to burnout. Participation in a supervision group (either early in one’s career or as a seasoned professional) can create a sense of community and allows for support to build with those who best understand the work you do everyday and the emotional demands of being a child and family therapist.

Developing Clinical Confidence and Improving Clinical Skills

Even though in your heart you know that you’re solid clinicians you still feel that little bit of imposter syndrome sometimes! I’ve been in the field for close to 20 years and that little monster still somehow creeps in!

Having a space to receive feedback on the interventions being used or just validating that your clinical instinct is right on can help you be more comfortable with the uncertainty that often comes with providing therapy. You are working with human beings and it is not a perfect science! Group supervision can offer other perspectives on the assessment process, treatment planning and overall case conceptualization. You don’t have to do it alone!

Ethical Dilemmas

Another very challenging aspect of being in private practice is when ethical dilemmas arise. Sometimes those dilemmas meet the threshold of reaching out to your liability insurance provider, however, often they don’t. Group supervision is a perfect place to discuss these dilemmas. You may even find that a colleague has experienced the same dilemma or something similar and they can help guide you through the challenges you’re experiencing.

Self-Care and Burnout Prevention

As discussed above, isolation is the greatest challenge facing therapists in private practice settings. You feel like you’re doing it alone and this can be overwhelming especially with your most difficult cases. Child and family therapists, rightly, often struggle to manage the emotional impact of their work and all that they have to hold for their clients. Group supervision can help clinicians build resilience through peer support and build lasting community connections.

Benefits for Clients and Families

All of the aspects mentioned above will lead to better outcomes for the children and families that you work with. By partaking in group supervision you will be better informed in the clinical decisions that you make, you may find a more vast palate of interventions to choose from and overall there will be a higher quality of care as a result of the collaboration you receive from your peers.

Once you find yourself practicing independently, please don’t leave group learning behind! At this new stage in your career, you can seek out group consultation once you are independently licensed! I invite you to see it as an ongoing opportunity for growth and support rather than just something you had to do when you were earning your supervision hours. You will find the benefits of collaboration, life long learning and support to be essential to providing stellar clinical care to your child and family clients for years to come!
