Credentials: LCSW, LICSW
Title: Clinical Supervisor
Pronouns: she/ella
Who I Work Best With:
I help therapists translate their knowledge into confident, ethical, evidence-based practice while developing self-awareness, clinical instincts, and sustainable boundaries through a trauma-informed, culturally responsive lens.
Whether you work in a large agency, hospital system, or small group practice, I help clinicians like you navigate systemic barriers while using self-reflection to focus on what is within your control. I draw from experience across schools, community mental health, hospitals, virtual IOP, and outpatient settings, and can support you working in any of these locations.
I work best with curious, open-minded clinicians committed to growth, honest self-reflection, and ethical, high-quality care. I especially enjoy supporting early-career therapists as you bridge theory and practice, develop your clinical voice, and build confidence in your judgment. In addition, I also support experienced clinicians seeking consultation, deeper clinical exploration, or guidance with complex cases and systems.
My approach is trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and incorporates family systems when appropriate. Together, we can challenge assumptions, try new approaches, learn from rupture and repair, and strengthen your clinical instincts. We will also explore transference and countertransference, ethical decision-making, boundaries, self-preservation, and healthy separation from work. Ultimately, my goal is to help clinicians become confident, compassionate therapists while building a sustainable, purpose-filled career.
Sarah Mitchiner is licensed and approved to provide clinical supervision in Oregon, Colorado, and Washington. She is an Independent Contractor with Firelight Supervision.
Habiendo vivido en Guatemala y trabajado con familias de México, estaría encantado de hablar con usted en español si lo desea. (After living in Guatemala and working with families from Mexico, I would be happy to speak with you in Spanish if you like!).
My supervision style always begins with rapport building and learning what your goals are that are important to you. Without trust and connection, it is hard to learn, grow, and challenge, so I ensure that we spend time developing that trust. My style is centered around reflective listening to help you reach your own conclusions, find your clinical voice, seek education in areas needed for growth, and build a humble confidence. I am here to help guide and teach when indicated, while respecting from the outset that you already bring important knowledge to the table.
I will help you build on your strengths and grow in areas that come less naturally to you. While it is easy to say ‘leave your own stuff’ at the office door, it is nearly impossible and is interconnected with our ability to empathize with our clients. By providing a space in supervision, in which you feel safe to check-in and reflect on influences that may be interfering with therapeutic progress, you will learn to recognize counter-transference when it arises and be able to truly focus on your clients, one at a time.

Supervision Training and Experience:
I have 15 years of experience as a clinical social worker and began my career working in school systems, including a therapeutic day school, working with highly dysregulated youth with significant trauma histories. I facilitated parent support groups, conducted family and individual therapy sessions, and collaborated with a multidisciplinary team. I learned Spanish while volunteering with youth and families in Guatemala and then practiced as a bilingual school-based therapist and mobile crisis therapist in community mental health, schools, hospitals, and outpatient settings.
I have over 30 hours of supervision-specific training, and have provided clinical supervision for over 8 years for school-based clinicians, community-based providers, and individual and family therapists in a virtual IOP setting. I continue to keep my toes in direct clinical practice to make sure I am keeping a pulse on the clinical care you provide everyday as well as attend my own supervision and consultation, as I truly value the opportunity to continue reflecting, growing, and challenging myself in this field. Some of my supervision specialties include: Reflective Supervision, Telesupervision, Relational Supervision, Navigating Ethical Issues, and Risk Management.
