Kush Desai

Credentials: LCSW, ACS, CT

Title: Approved Clinical Supervisor

Pronouns: He/Him

Who I Work Best With:

I work well with clinicians in private practice, healthcare, and community-based settings who want to deepen their clinical confidence while providing inclusive, culturally responsive care. I support mental health therapists, particularly BIPOC clinicians and those working with diverse, multicultural populations, who may be navigating questions of race, identity, power, and systemic dynamics in their clinical work.

My expertise includes focusing on strengthening your clinical judgment and confidence so you can offer thoughtful, grounded care while navigating complex identity, cultural, and systemic dynamics. Many of the clinicians I work with are reflecting on how their own identities and lived experiences intersect with those of their clients, and may feel uncertain about how to name, explore, or ethically respond to what arises in the room.

You may be asking yourself:

  • How do I show up authentically with clients across differences in race, culture, or identity?
  • How do I address race and identity issues in sessions without causing harm or avoiding what matters?
  • How do I stay clinically grounded while also being culturally responsive and aware?

If you’re sitting with these questions, you don’t need more theory. You need space to think, reflect, and make sense of what’s happening in real time. My role is to help you slow the work down, think clearly, and build confidence so your practice feels intentional, ethical, and aligned with your values.

Kush is licensed and approved to provide clinical supervision in Colorado. Kush is an Independent Contractor with Firelight Supervision.

Supervision

STYLE

My supervision style is reflective, collaborative, and grounded in cultural humility. I approach supervision with curiosity and respect for each clinician’s lived experience, identity, and developing professional voice. I intentionally create space to explore race, identity, power, and systemic influences, alongside core clinical skills such as assessment, documentation, and treatment planning.

In our work together, you are encouraged to take the lead on what feels most important, while I help track patterns and provide practical guidance. I balance reflection with direction, supporting you in developing your own clinical judgment while also ensuring your work remains ethical, competent, and clinically sound.

The clinicians who tend to work well with me are thoughtful, values-driven, and often navigating complexity. Whether that’s identity-related dynamics, imposter syndrome, ethical uncertainty, or the transition into independent practice. I see supervision as a space where I function as a consultant, teacher, and collaborator helping you build confidence in your work.

Supervision Training and Experience:

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Colorado and Wyoming, and hold the Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) credential through the Center for Credentialing and Education. I am also a Designated Qualified Clinical Supervisor (DQCS) with the Wyoming Mental Health Professionals Licensing Board and hold a national certification in Thanatology (CT), with specialized training in grief, loss, and end-of-life care. The Certification in Thanatology required substantial experience hours in grief care, recommendation letters, and the passage of a national exam. These credentials reflect both formal preparation and a sustained commitment to ethical, developmentally appropriate supervision.

My supervision training is grounded not only in formal coursework and continuing education, but also in extensive graduate-level academic work focused on race, identity, and anti-oppressive practice. This work includes a critical analysis of how traditional “cultural competence” models often fail to adequately prepare clinicians, especially BIPOC clinicians, to navigate racism, identity-based harm, and power dynamics within clinical settings. Instead, my approach emphasizes critical consciousness, cultural humility, and actively addressing race and identity in supervision and practice rather than avoiding or minimizing these dynamics. My earlier clinical and academic experiences have involved direct reflection on my own racial and cultural identity as an Asian Indian clinician. This includes navigating experiences within healthcare and social work environments.

Professionally, I have provided supervision and consultation across healthcare, hospice, outpatient therapy, and private practice settings. I have supervised provisionally licensed clinicians, licensed therapists, and graduate interns while also holding leadership roles focused on documentation quality, regulatory compliance, and workflow development. I strive to provide supervision that is accountable, inclusive, and responsive to the realities of practicing within complex systems.
